Critical Role is to Normal D&D as Pornography is to Normal Sex
I wasn't expecting to make another video so soon, but a random comment on yesterday's video turned out to lead me to the perfect analogy for what Critical Role is really like in comparison to D&D, and also to the effect it has on newbie players. Critical Role affects would-be normal-D&D newbs in the same way that porn can affect virgin's perceptions of what normal sex is like.
I was thinking it was like pro wrestling way back before everyone knew it was prearranged, but at least those guys would occasionally say "We're specially trained."
Side story: my wife once watched my group play. After everyone was gone later that night, she said "Yeah, that wasn't at all like I thought it would be. It looked really boring." Because D&D is boring to watch.
I am not speaking to the quality of the videos (I haven't watched them) I am speaking to The RpgPundit's claim that they aren't real D&D players which in fact, they are.
I sometimes cringe a little at some of your broad statements and/or generalizations, but there you nailed it.

I wonder what it would be like to watch professional actors play Alpha Blue...?
ReplyDeleteActually I watched a video where they talked about Critical Roll and apparently those people were playing D&D before being asked to do a Youtube show.
ReplyDeleteSo they are real D&D players
sure and sometimes porn stars have real sex, but there is a difference between what you do in front of a camera and what you do in real life.

DeleteExcept that I didn't say they aren't real D&D players. I'm saying that they're not actually playing a normal game of D&D.
Deleteporn has better acting, but, yeah, I buy that
