Cracked Monday

Today, we take a look at some utter assholes.

One of the big problems one faces if one is involved in occultism is the sheer volume of total bullshit that floods that environment, as a product of people failing to use the least bit of criteria.  The mentality of "having an open mind" leads to vast numbers of people whose minds are septic tanks, flooded with garbage.  Its a natural product of people wanting to believe in fairy tales. And it leads to total cunts looking to make a quick buck selling fairy-tales bottled as snake-oil, with cheap parlor tricks.  The mess of this, in turn, creates a shit reputation for occultism that smears everything by association.

"Belief" was once famously defined by Aleister Crowley as "the power of trying to convince yourself of something you suspect to be untrue".  And whether you're talking about conventional religion or the esoteric, its actually the enemy of the work of experiencing truth.

  1. There's a pretty significant movement of "bake your own religion". People who pick a few things here and there, mush it all together and call it good.

In the big picture, they tend to be pretty harmless, so I guess I can't fault them, but the tendency to claim they are totally relying on "millennial old beliefs" is disingenuous at best

  2. Yes, its problematic, but especially when there IS a "millennial old belief" that their claims bare no resemblance to.
ie. New Agers misappropriating and totally misunderstanding ideas from Hinduism.
ie. New Agers misappropriating and totally misunderstanding ideas from Buddhism.
ie. New Agers misappropriating and totally misunderstanding ideas from Paganism.
ie. New Agers misappropriating and totally misunderstanding ideas from Native Americans.

    etc. etc. ad nauseum

  3. And of course, the reason there are so many psychic bullshit-art salesmen out there is because there are so many customers for exactly that. These are people who WANT to be lied to; they might claim "they want to believe" but that's not true. They know within themselves that they're looking for a lie to allow them to comfortably avoid seeking truth, and that's exactly what the New Age Frauds sell them.

  4. I always thought that the fact that a lot of people seem to change religions so easily was a pretty good indication that they never really believed that much to begin with.
