Traveller Campaign: Things Get Crazy in the Culture Extremes

So, after our last session, one of the players in my group reported to me that he'd seen the show Firefly with an ex-player of mine (not in the sense of kicked out or something, just not presently playing), and that ex-player commented that 'having played Traveller, I don't really get how people say Firefly is all that similar to it".

He should have come see this weekend's session.

It started out with the PC's being on the run from the law with what I'd reported last time as the "Traveller equivalent of the Millenium Falcon", but it's become clear that it's really a little bit more like this:

And, courtesy of dear old possibly-dead, possibly-undead, possibly-immortal Uncle Roman (the previous owner), it even came complete with a down home soundtrack from old earth:

Then, after a quick stop in Space Las Vegas for some plastic surgery and fake IDs (to confound the Feds), they headed off to the extreme ultraculture high-tech world of the sector, a little bit like this:

But that was just a quick stop to buy some heavy ordnance and get some serious genetic and cybernetic augments they figured they'd need for the coming travails, in a place where there's no law to speak of and almost anything could be purchased.  After that, they headed off into the deep boonies, where they had a run-in with the Traveller version of these guys:

Just in time for the Inbred Space Yokels to go apeshit on the research facility they desperately needed to get access to; though the PCs seem a bit unclear about whether the goal was to access said facility in order to clear their name, or just get stupidly rich.

Anyways, a high-tech low-tech rip-roaring hootin'-and-hollerin' space-whale of a time was had by all.

  2. ''having played Traveller, I don't really get how people say Firefly is all that similar to it".

I reckon it was the ubiquity in original Traveller of good ole slug throwers, I mean six shooters, as the weapon of choice instead of some kind a fancy new-fangled ray gun.

  3. They're nothing alike. Firefly sucks; Traveller is awesome.

    1. I do think Traveller is awesome, and I never actually liked Firefly; I think it was vastly over-hyped by its fans and in no way lives up to that hype. However, I do think it is very similar to Traveller in terms of setting/context.

  4. Firefly's hardly a perfect match for Traveller's 3I, but it's closer to the way many people played Traveller (Spinward Marches or other "Frontier" sector) than any other TV series has been.

Firefly as privately operated free traders, a combination of low and high technologies in the same place, eclectic crews with unlikely back stories, a powerful central authority, Nobles and a lot of semi-independent worlds with "big fish in their little pond" type leaders. And a major factor in one one episode was clearly inspired by Traveller's "Social Standing" statistic.

Starhunter was another such show, as was Cowboy Bebop.
